About Kornkaew

Montessori in a Thai context, since 1984.

Kornkaew Montessori School was established in 1984 by Dr Kamkeo Kraisoraphong as a private school for children aged one to six, and was certified by Thailand’s Ministry of Education in the same year.

It was Khunying Bunluean Khrueatrachu, former Director-General of the Department of General Education, who suggested bringing the Montessori method into the school. The first teachers were trained by Associate Professor Dr Jeerapan Poolpat, and Kornkaew has taught this way ever since.

Four decades, in four milestones

  • 1984. Founded in Dusit by Dr Kamkeo Kraisoraphong, and certified by Thailand’s Ministry of Education.
  • 1999. Thailand’s education reform put the learner at the centre, and Montessori was one of the approaches chosen to carry it. Kornkaew was appointed a Montessori Demonstration School in the Thai context by the Office of the Education Council at the Ministry of Education.
  • 2003. The Thailand Association of Montessori Schools was registered, with Dr Kamkeo as its President. Through the Association, Montessori teaching in the Thai context has spread across the country, as far as the three southern border provinces.
  • Today. Two campuses under one group: the original trilingual school in Dusit, and KIMS, the international campus in Ari.

What forty years means for your child

A parent choosing Kornkaew today is choosing a school that has taught this way since 1984, and has been refining it in a Thai context ever since. The teachers who train here go on to train others; the garden the children learn in has been a classroom for two generations; and many of today’s parents were once pupils themselves.

The garden is the classroom

Most of the school day happens outdoors, as it always has: planting, tending, observing, harvesting.

Montessori, in a Thai context

Thai language, Thai festivals and Thai warmth run through the school day alongside the Montessori materials: the blend the Demonstration School appointment recognised.
